Sen. Tito Sotto

MANILA – Senator Vicente “Tito” Sotto III on Monday was re-elected as the Senate President for the opening of 18th Congress.

Sotto was voted by majority of the senators by viva voce.

Most of the senators attended the election except for the incarcerated Sen. Leila De Lima and Sen. Manny Pacquiao, who is still in Las Vegas after winning his boxing match against Keith Thurman.

Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri and Sen. Pia Cayetano nominated Sotto for the presidency, with the other lawmakers seconding the said nomination.

Despite the overflowing support from his colleagues, Senators Franklin Drilon, Risa Hontiveros, and Kiko Pangilinan chose to abstain from voting.

In line with today’s event is the oath-taking of the new senators that will serve the government for six years.

They are Sens. Imee Marcos, Ronald dela Rosa, Francis Tolentino, Bong Go at Lito Lapid and Bong Revilla.
