The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) closely monitors heightened activity in three active volcanoes across the Philippines. Kanlaon Volcano is under Alert Level 3, indicating increased unrest and potential hazardous eruptions. Both Mayon and Taal Volcanoes remain at Alert Level 1, signifying low-level activity.

Kanlaon Volcano (Alert Level 3)

Kanlaon Volcano shows significant unrest, with possible hazardous eruptions.

Key Observations:
• Ash Eruptions: 2 emissions lasting 59 to 65 minutes each
• Volcanic Earthquakes: 20 recorded, including 7 tremors lasting 29 to 92 minutes
• Sulfur Dioxide (SO₂) Emission: 6,014 tons/day (as of December 25, 2024)
• Plume Activity: Continuous steam and ash plumes reaching 400 meters high, drifting west, northwest, and southwest
• Ground Deformation: Ongoing inflation

Residents are prohibited from entering the 4-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) and are urged to prepare for possible evacuation.

Taal Volcano (Alert Level 1)

Taal Volcano remains at low activity but continues to exhibit minor volcanic movements.

Key Observations:
• Volcanic Earthquakes: 4 tremors lasting 3 to 6 minutes each
• Sulfur Dioxide (SO₂) Emission: 1,181 tons/day (as of December 23, 2024)
• Plume Activity: Steam emissions reaching 600 meters high, drifting southwest
• Ground Deformation: Deflation of the broader Taal Caldera with localized inflation

PHIVOLCS advises avoiding the Main Crater and fissures for safety.

Mayon Volcano (Alert Level 1)

Mayon Volcano shows low-level activity, with recorded rockfalls and minor emissions.

Key Observations:
• Volcanic Earthquakes: 1 recorded
• Rockfall Events: 20 occurrences
• Sulfur Dioxide (SO₂) Emission: 1,058 tons/day (as of December 2, 2024)
• Plume Activity: Moderate steam emissions drifting west-southwest and west-northwest
• Ground Deformation: Minor swelling

Residents are reminded to stay outside the 6-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) to avoid potential hazards.

PHIVOLCS continues to monitor all three volcanoes and urges the public to remain vigilant and follow updates from local authorities.
