Celebration turned into a nightmare when an overloaded ferry capsized carrying about 200 people, mostly women and children, while celebrating the Kurdish New Year and Mother’s Day in Tigri River near the Iraqi City of Mosul on Thursday.
The boat had been ferrying numbers of tourists to a small island nearby when the accident occurred.
The said accident nearly killed almost 100 people including families, officals said.
Victims could be seen bobbing in the water while struggling to swim against the strong current of the river.
Interior Ministry official Major-General Saad Maan confirmed 94 people were killed in the accident while Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi regulated an investigation and said those responsible will be held accountable.
At least 55 people, including 19 children, were rescued.
