CAUAYAN CITY – Local government of Conner and Apayao City has given financial assistance to the victims of a truck tragedy in Gassud, Karikitan, Conner, Apayao that caused the death of 19 passengers while 22 sustained serious injuries.
In an interview of Bombo Radyo Cauayan, Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Officer (MDRRMO) Albert Bacuyag said that even though most of the passengers who died were from Rizal, Cagayan and only one passenger came from Allangigan, Conner, Mayor Martina Dangoy of Conner, Apayao already offered her help to the victims.
Meanwhile, Governor Eleanor Bulot Begtang paid for the victims’ hospital and funeral expenses.
Mayor Dangoy also coordinated with Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) to provide additional assistance for the passengers.
The authorities initially said they were looking for a possibility of overloading that caused the accident. Aside from 44 passengers on board, the elf truck was also carrying 43 bags of seedlings.
The vehicle fell in a 20-meter deep cliff.
