At least 15 people died after a passenger ferry capsized off near Madura island on Monday.
East Java Police spokesman Frans Barung Mangera said that the overloaded ferry overturned in rough seas and was carrying at least 50 people.
On Tuesday, rescuers found 13 bodies which bring the total number of victims to 15, with 31 survivors
Local authorities believes that there could be more victims than thel three people who were officially listed as missing.
“It’s suspected that the boat was overloaded. The boat was hit by a large wave, overturned and sank,” Mangera said in a statement.
Shortly after the accident, several fishermen found the 10-meter long traditional vessel shortly after the accident.
Indonesia is famous for being an archipelago with 17,000 islands.
Despite poor safety standard, the country continues to use ferries and boats as a mean of transportation.
