At least 53 people died in Turkey and 42 in Syria as a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hits Gaziantep, the southeastern part of Turkey.

The said earthquake happened around 4:17 am today and had a depth of 17.9 kilometers or 11 miles.

Based on the report of the United States Geological Service, there was another 6.7 magnitude earthquake that occurred near the one previously recorded 15 minutes later but it was shallow.

The earthquake was felt in Lebanon, Syria, and Cyprus.

Many buildings were damaged in the southeast part of the country.

It can be remembered that Turkey is one of the most active earthquake zones in the world.
