Authorities confirmed that at least 36 people died because of the storm that hit the Brazilian coast.
The heavy rains and landslides swept houses and block the roads, making the rescuers struggle to reach the affected areas.
According to the reports, more than 23.6 inches of rain fell which was above average for the expected rainfall in a month.
“Search and rescue teams are not managing to get to several places; it is a chaotic situation”, said the Mayor of the hard-hit town of São Sebastião, Felipe Augusto.
As of now, the estimated damage is still being measured.
Furthermore, a lot of people were reported missing, and about 50 houses were totally devastated.
Around 228 people have been left homeless and 338 are in the evacuation center.
As a response, six towns in the state were under a 180-day state of calamity: São Sebastião, Caraguatatuba, Ilhabela, Guarujá, and Bertioga.
