The government reported on Saturday that the four indigenous children, who had been lost for more than five weeks in Colombia’s southern forest after surviving a plane accident that killed their mother, are in “acceptable” health.

After being sought after for weeks by the military, Indigenous communities, and others, the twins were finally located on Friday in Caqueta province. They were originally treated by military doctors before being sent to a military hospital in the nation’s capital, Bogota.

On Saturday morning, President Gustavo Petro, his family, and other authorities paid a visit to the hospital’s pediatric patients. Petro tweeted that the rescue was an example of several organizations cooperating for the greater good.

“In general the boy and the girls are in an acceptable state. According to the medical reports they are out of danger,” Defense Minister Ivan Velasquez said during a press conference after the visit.

The children are not yet able to eat, he added, but are being hydrated and stabilized.
