Iginiit ng Malacañang sa China sa kauna-unahang pagkakataon ang 2016 ruling ng Permanent Court of Arbitration na nagpapawalang-saysay sa historic claim o nine-dash line demarcation ng Beijing sa halos kabuuan na ng South China Sea kasama na ang exclusive economic zone ng Pilipinas.
Ginawa ni Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo ang mensahe kasunod ng naging pahayag ni Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang na ang Spratly Islands o Nansha ay bahagi ng Chinese territory.
Sinabi ni Sec. Panelo, bagama’t sang-ayon sila sa pahayag ng Chinese foreign ministry spokesman na maaaring maresolba ang territorial dispute sa pamamagitan ng mapayapang negosasyon, pero nakapaglabas na ng ruling ang arbitral tribunal.
Ayon kay Sec. Panelo, naninindigan ang Pilipinas sa claims o pag-angkin nito sa mga teritoryo at exclusive economic zones alinsunod hindi lamang sa arbitral judgment kundi maging sa Konstitusyon at adhikain ng sambayanang Pilipino.
Una ng inihayag ni Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte na dapat umalis ang mga barko ng China sa paligid ng Pag-asa Island at huwag gagawalin ang isla kundi ay magpapadala siya ng “suicide missions.
“While we concur with the Chinese official’s statement that the dispute can be best threshed out through peaceful negotiation, the arbitral ruling however has already been rendered,” ani Sec. Panelo. “We remain steadfast in maintaining our claims with respect to our territory and exclusive economic zones pursuant not only to the said arbitral judgment based on accepted principles of public international law but consistent with the directives of our Constitution and the aspirations of the Filipino people.”
