The Commission on Elections delayed the filing of the certificate of candidacy for the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections to reduce violence during the election period.
It can be recalled that the filing of the certificate of candidacy was first announced as July 3-7 but now it has been made August 28-September 2.
This is after Senator Francis Tolentino proposed delaying the said filing because it will make it difficult for the local government units due to election-related restrictions.
According to Commission on Elections Chairperson George Erwin Garcia, there is more violence and it is said to be more expensive if the filing is early, which is why they thought it would be better to adjust it.
Chairperson Garcia added that as we approach these scheduled dates, the Commission on Elections will surely be ready.
The Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections are said to be very important because of the intense situation in barangays.
Further, this delay will give enough time for the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police to be prepared for what may happen, especially the possible violence during the election period.
