Education Secretary Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara assured that the Department of Education (DepEd) will not permit the teaching of “inappropriate concepts” in schools.

He stated that the agency will comply with the law regarding comprehensive sexuality education (CSE).

This follows the spread of a social media post about the “Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Bill” in the Senate.

Some netizens opposed a provision in the proposed bill that aims to mandate the teaching of CSE in schools.

In the said provision, CSE will mandate the discussion of topics such as adolescent reproductive health, consent, gender sensitivity, the rights of women and youth, among others.

It will also be taught in a manner appropriate to the students’ age.

The proposed bill aims to remove the stigma surrounding reproductive health issues to address the increasing number of young mothers in the country.

The House of Representatives passed the proposed bill on its third and final reading in 2023. In the Senate, it is currently pending in the plenary.

“Nakikinig kami—noon bilang Senador at hanggang ngayon bilang inyong Kalihim. Bukas ang pintuan ng DepEd para sa inyong pahayag at mungkahi, lalo na kung may tiyak na detalye,” Angara said.
