The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) welcomed the Senate’s passage of the third and final reading of the Magna Carta for Seafarers, which greatly benefits Filipino seafarers.
According to DMW OIC Hans Leo Cacdac, this measure will greatly benefit the thousands of seafarers in the country who contribute greatly to the maritime industry.
Cacdac said, the DMW will continue to work with various agencies to ensure the safety of seafarers.
The proposal will be sent to a congressional bicameral conference committee that will aim to resolve the differences between the disagreeing provisions of the Senate and House versions.
According to Cacdac, the passage of the proposal sends a strong signal to the international maritime and shipping industry that the Philippines is determined to comply with its obligations in the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) for seafarers.
Cacdac also thanked President Marcos for certifying the bill as “urgent”.
Among the main highlights of the proposal is the Seafarer-Centric Approach that places Filipino seafarers as a priority, with a focus on their rights, safety, and well-being while working at sea.
