BAGUIO CITY – The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) ordered penaties against Chinese contractor of the ongoing P4.3 billion Chico Pump Irrigation Project in Kalinga and Cagayan provinces in violation of the Philippine labor laws.

Aside from the contractor, 25 other Chinese workers were also fined P10,000 each due to failure to present the required alien employment permit for foreign workers.

DOLE-Cordillera regional director Exequiel Ronnie Guzman identified the contractor of the said project as China CAMC Engineering Company Limited, a state-owned construction company in China.

The Labor Department also required the foreign workers to apply for alien employment permit that is now undergoing regular processing.

Earlier, the project management office of the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) duly certified that the work of the Chinese workers is classified as highly technical due to the technology and units of equipment being used in the project.

Guzman also disclosed that officials of the China CAMC Engineering Company Limited reportedly apologized to DOLE for their failure to secure required permits explaining that they were not appropriately informed on such requirements.
