Former Manila City Jail warden Gerald Bantag took his oath on Friday before the office of Justice Sec. Menardo Guevarra as the newly-appointed Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Director-General.

Bantag replaced former BuCor chief Nicanor Faeldon after being fired by President Rodrigo Duterte in August for disobeying his order to stop the release of heinous crime convicts under Good Conduct Time Allowance Law.

Bantag’s first day as BuCor chief coincides with the end of the 15-day deadline set by President Rodrigo Duterte for prisoners erroneously released under the GCTA to surrender.

Guevarra ordered Bantag to focus on three major objectives with urgency. First is to clean up the GCTA (Good Conduct Time Allowance) mess; second, full computerization; and stop illegal drug trade inside New Bilibid Prison.

In August 2016, Bantag was the warden of the Parañaque City Jail when a grenade exploded and 10 inmates were killed.
