Dagsin

The Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP) clarified that the independent film “Dagsin” has not yet been formally selected as Philippines’ entry for the prestigious Oscars Academy Awards 2020.

FAP’s director-general Leo Martinez issued a statement following the reports which indicated that Dagsin (Gravity) is “the Philippines’ submission to the Oscars category formerly known as foreign language film.”

“The movie Dagsin is among the movies that is being considered as a POSSIBLE ENTRY to the International Feature Film Category of Oscars and NOT THE COUNTRY’S OFFICIAL ENTRY YET,” written in the statement.

“The screening of the films being considered by a local screening panel approved by the Oscars will begin in September, to meet the deadline of the submission of the country’s film entry on October 1. It is only after October 1 then that we can declare an official Philippine film entry to the international film feature category of the Oscars.”

The said film starred some well-seasoned actors of the country such as Tommy Abuel and Marita Zobel.

Abuel played the role of a World War II veteran who survived Death March and wanted to connect with his deceased wife (Zobel) by reading the diaries she left behind.

Dagsin first premiered as one of the official entries on Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival in 2016.

The 92nd Academy Awards ceremony will take place at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California on February 9, 2020. Presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Oscars aims to honor the best films of 2019.
