Senator Kiko Pangilinan confirmed that he already resigned as the president of the Liberal Party (LP) and is only waiting for the approval of Vice Pres. Leni Robredo.
The decision came after the defeat of otso diretso opposition for the senatorial candidates in the recently concluded 2019 midterm elections.
Pangilinan took full responsibility of the candidates’ loss.
“As campaign manager for the Otso Diretso slate, I was unable to ensure our victory in the elections and I therefore assume full responsibility for the outcome and hold myself primarily accountable for this defeat & have tendered my resignation as president of the LP effective June 30, 2019,†he said in a statement.
Panigilinan was more upset when Sen. Bam Aquino failed to secure a spot in the Magic 12.
Together with Pangilinan, Quezon City 6th district Kit Belmonte also resigned as LP general secretary.
On the other hand, he made clear that his decision to quit is not a “command responsibility.”
Based on the on-going canvassing of Commission on Elections, nine senatorial candidates supported by Duterte’s administration are set to be proclaimed along with three independent candidates.
20 senators are expected to complete the majority of the 18th Congress.
While Sen. Franklin Drilon, Leila De Lima, Risa Hontiveros and Kiko Pangilinan will remain in the minority block. (with reports from Bombo Christian Yosores)
