The 23-year old Teofimo Lopez outclassed Vasiliy Lomachenko to earn the undisputed lightweight title via unanimous decision at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The taller Lopez maximized his length to keep Lomachenko away while connecting body shots.
Although both fighters were cautious in the first few rounds, Lopez had the upper hand as Lomachenko had difficulty going in.
The Brooklyn native continued his strong performance by ending the sixth round with a strong uppercut that bent Lomachenko’s knees.
It was on the eight-round where the action heated up.
The Ukrainian connected several combinations in a bid to close the lead of the undefeated opponent.
However, he accidentally headbutted Lopez in the eight after a rugged exchange.
Lopez meanwhile committed a low blow in the 10th.
Again, the action went up in the final round as both boxers unleashed all they left in the tank.
A cut finally opened on Lopez’s right eye on another headbutt before the clock officially ended.
The referees scored the fight 116-112, 119-109, 117-111, all in favor of Lopez.
The now undisputed champion now has 16 wins with 12 knockouts.
Lomachenko suffered his second defeat with 14 wins.
