The powerful typhoon Mawar is expected to strike Okinawa Prefecture in southwest Japan later this week, and the country’s weather agency has issued a warning about high tides and strong gusts around the Sakishima Islands starting on Monday.
At 9 in the morning, the typhoon was traveling at a speed of about 10 kilometers per hour from the east of the Philippines, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency, on Monday.
At its center, it had an atmospheric pressure of 950 hectopascals and was packing winds of high to 216 kph.
On Wednesday, it is anticipated to get close to the Shakishima Islands, which are off main island of Okinawa.
According to the weather service, the tides on Monday might reach heights of up to 5 meters on Okinawa’s main island and 7 meters close to the Sakishima Islands.
Additionally, it predicted that gusts might reach 108 kph in the Sakishima Islands and 90 kph on Okinawa’s main island.
