17,751 out of 2.1 million Grade 11 students from State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) and Local Universities and Colleges (LUCs) can be affected by the discontinuation of the senior high school (SHS) program next school year, following the mandate of the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd).

Department of Education Undersecretary Michael Poa explained that the grade 11 enrolled students can still finish their program however, they must enroll in a different school for School Year (SY) 2024-2025.

The undersecretary said that there are two options that the incoming grade 12 enrollees may avail of— either enrolling in public schools or applying for a SHS program voucher in private schools.

Poa also clarified that the SUCs and LUCs are no longer offering SHS vouchers for grade 11 this SY, while the grade 12 students may still use their existing vouchers.

“Based on the reports of our Regional Directors, our public schools will be able to accommodate those that may be displaced,” Poa said, following the concern of displacement.

“May mga regions rin po na wala nang SHS learners sa mga SUCs and LUCs so no one will be displaced in these regions,” he added.
