All 30 NBA teams were united in the decision to retire jersey no. 6 in honor of the late and the great Bill Russell.
Russell, who passed away recently, won 11 NBA championships in 13 seasons.
The NBA Finals MVP trophy was also named after him and his death was a great loss not just to the league but to the basketball world.
With this, upcoming players will no longer be allowed to wear No. 6 jerseys on any team, current active players who are wearing them are the only ones allowed.
“Bill Russell’s unparalleled success on the court and pioneering civil rights activism deserve to be honoured in a unique and historic way,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said.
“Permanently retiring his number six across every NBA team ensures that Bill’s transcendent career will always be recognised.”
