NEW YORK – New York state elected Filipino American, Steven Raga as assemblyman, and was recorded as the first time in the said country.
On Sunday, he took his oath before US Senate Majority Leader Chuch Chumer in New York City and he will be representing District 30 of Queens including a big Asian-American community.
“Everything that we can do to protect Asian-Americans and help people feel safe no matter what background, that is definitely a priority for us. I know a lot of Filipino-Americans have experienced this harassment or physical violence towards them but have not reported it,” Steven Raga said.
Chumer on the other hand considered Raga, as the future of America.
Moreover, Raga emphasized that in his term he will focus on bail reform, increasing penalties for the criminal and civil offenses of gun traffickers, mental health services, and elevating the fund for police forces.
Philippine Consulate General Senen Mangalile welcomed the remarkable win of Raga as New York State’s first Filipino American assemblyman.
“The Philippine Consulate General in New York considers Steven’s historic victory as a validation of the resounding political voice of the Filipino-American community in particular, and the Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) community, in general. With Steven in office, the welfare and interests of Filipino-Americans and the AAPI will be pushed to the forefront,” Philippine Consulate General Senen Mangalile said.
