“This is a triumphant day for those who voted for Brexit— January 31st, 11PM, marks the day that the UK had its independence from the European Union. This is a historic day. Many people are expecting that the UK will be able to make its own laws, have its own employment laws, immigration laws, its own agreements between various countries for the import and export of goods, without having to rely on Europe to dictate to us how we should behave.”
“I also believe this is an excellent day for Filipinos back home in the Philippines, because you know, we had to look for workers in the European Union, but post Brexit, there’ll be an immigration point system introduced in the UK, so regardless of what country you come from, if you match the quota, of course, you’ll be invited to apply. For those Filipinos living in the Philippines who’d like to come to the UK, I believe now [there are more] opportunities. I think for those Filipinos in the United Kingdom, I don’t think anything would change whatsoever, if they’re working here. In fact, I think they’ll have greater opportunities, because some European workers will go back to their home countries so there will be more job opportunities in the UK. So I think this is a blessing.”
“However, there is a downside. If you’re a Filipino in a European country, whereas before you could have moved to other European countries, it may now be a little bit more complicated for you to do so.”
“I think the issue is even for us in the United Kingdom. Before Brexit, we were able to travel freely to other countries within Europe and worked there, but after Brexit, that’s no longer possible. We can visit up to 90 days to another European country but we can’t actually go ahead and live there.”
“It’s still early day. The United Kingdom only left the EU yesterday. Let’s see what transpires. The next year is gonna be a year to decide our own policies, decide our own laws, our own immigration policy, but I do think this is probably positive, even for Filipinos back home in the Philippines.”
