Organizers of the Ironman 70.3 in Davao revealed that a participant passed away after racing in it on Sunday at Azuela Cove.

The competitor “required medical attention during the swim portion of the race and was transported to a nearby hospital where they were treated,” according to the race’s organizers.

“Our condolences go out to the athlete’s family and friends, whom we will continue to support.”

On Sunday, nearly 1,700 athletes participants from 46 different nations competed in the 1.9-kilometer swim, 90-kilometer bike ride, and 21-kilometer run.

Felipe Azevedo of Portugal and Sarah Crowley of Australia won the competition.
