The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) officially handed over its pioneering humanitarian vessel, the PRC M/V Amazing Grace, to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on March 18.

This historic transfer was honored by the presence of PCG Auxiliary Vice Admiral and First Lady Liza Marcos, who accepted the donation on behalf of the PCG. Joining her were PRC Chairman and CEO Dick Gordon, PRC Secretary-General Dr. Gwen Pang, Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon, PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan, and Vice Admiral Eduardo Ma R. Santos AFP (Ret), President of the Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific (MAAP), along with other esteemed dignitaries.

“We acquired this ship in the aftermath of Super Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda), during which I was deeply frustrated by our inability to swiftly reach the Visayas and Mindanao. As a member of the International Federation of Red Cross board, I fought passionately and declared, ‘By hook or by crook, we must have a ship! We are an archipelagic nation, and a robust maritime fleet is essential for our survival,’” emphasized PRC Chairman Gordon.

“When the Coast Guard expressed interest in purchasing our ship, I stood firm and told PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gavan, ‘You will not pay a single centavo.’ The Coast Guard’s unwavering dedication to the nation deserves nothing less than our wholehearted support. We are committed to working hand-in-hand with you,” Gordon further declared.

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon lauded the collaboration, stating, “Few organizations exemplify unconditional service and patriotism as profoundly as the Philippine Red Cross and the Philippine Coast Guard. Witnessing this extraordinary act of generosity from the Red Cross to the Coast Guard is deeply inspiring.”

PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan underscored the significance of this event: “This occasion reflects the exceptional partnership between the Philippine Red Cross and the Coast Guard. Our organizations are not just allies—we are one, bound by the indomitable spirit of volunteerism. Today’s event reinforces the enduring strength of our bond and our shared commitment to the nation.”

Though the Philippine Red Cross M/V Amazing Grace has found a new home, the collaboration between the PRC and PCG remains steadfast. Together, they reaffirm their shared mission of safeguarding lives and extending their legacy of service—whether by land or by sea.
