The head of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Superintendent Lt. Gen. Ronnie Evangelista has stepped down from his position after the tragic death of PMA Cadet 4th Class Darwin Dormitorio.

Evangelista announced his decision at a press briefing in Baguio City on Tuesday.

The resignation came a day after Evangelista said he would not abandon the ongoing investigations regarding the case and he will only quit if President Rodrigo Duterte would ask him to do so.

“In the military tradition of command responsibility, it is now the proper time for me as the head of institution together with the commander of cadets to relinquish our respective positions,” he told reporters.

“I will do all that is left to be done while I wait for the official orders.”

Dormitorio, 20, was found unconscious in the barracks of the academy and rushed to Fort del Pilar Hospital in Baguio City on Tuesday, September 17. He was declared dead on arrival.

It was found that Dormitorio died due to “blunt force trauma.”
