PERU – Peruvian protesters resumed protest after two weeks of holiday, calling President Dina Boluarte to leave the post.
In addition, protesters are also demanding the closure of the Congress, which gain disapproval along with an amendment to the constitution and the release of former President Pedro Castillo from prison.
The protest blocks the main routes in the southern regions of Puno, Cusco, Apurimac, and Arequipa, same with Junin the department in the center of the country using stones and burning tyres.
“There are 10 blockades, mainly around Puno,” spokesman Alberto Otarola said.
Meanwhile, almost 2,000 tourists were escorted due to the suspension of service between the town of Cusco and the Machu Picchu historical site and thousands were stranded during the first wave of the protest.
President Boluarte said in a speech referring and blaming the protesters for “delays, pain, economic losses” and urged “peace, calm, unity to promote the development of the homeland”.
However, protest leader Milan Knezvich emphasize in a statement, “no one will want to talk to her. As long as Mrs. Dina Boluarte does not resign, this will continue”.
The protest as it can be remembered is the effect of the impeachment, arrest, and detention of former President Castillo last December 2022.
