As Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital, prepared to commemorate its creation anniversary on Sunday, Russia launched waves of air strikes on the city overnight in what officials claimed seemed to be the largest drone attack on the city since the beginning of the war.

The 52 out of the 54 drones launched by Russia were shot down, according to the Ukrainian Air Force, calling it a record attack with the Iranian-made ‘kamikaze’ drones. It was not immediately clear how many of the drones were shot over Kyiv.

A 41-year-old man was killed by falling debris in what looks to be the first fatal attack on Kyiv in May and the 14th assault this month, according to mayor Vitali Klitschko.

The city of Kiev observes Kyiv Day on the last Sunday in May to commemorate the city’s official founding, which occurred 1,541 years ago. The day is typically celebrated with street fairs, live shows, and special museum exhibits; plans for these events have also been made this year, albeit on a smaller scale.

The head of President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s office, Andriy Yermak, claimed on his Telegram channel that “the history of Ukraine is a long-standing irritant for the insecure Russians,”
