Shawn Porter has decided to officially walk away from boxing moments after TKO by Terrence Crawford in their WBO welterweight title fight.
“I was prepared to announce my retirement tonight — win, lose, or draw.”
“Even if it was a draw — they had a date; they were telling us we were going to have to do it again — I was not going to do it again. I’m announcing my retirement right now.”
The former IBF and WBC welterweight champ formally announced the news on his post-fight press conference.
He said that he didn’t want to be just a gatekeeper, and he had his mind to be among those in the tops.
His last fight, though, was a great one, they put a boxing match to remember, and many even questioned that his corner’s stoppage to the fight was premature.
Shawn’s dad, Kenny, was the one who asked for the stoppage.
