Magsasaka party-list Rep. Argel Cabatbat blamed pork smuggling as one of the reasons for the outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) in several parts of the country.

“Inadvertently hindi sinasadya ang pagkakapasok ng carrier, pero mas mababa ang tsansa nito,” said Cabatbat.

He also believed that a total ban on all pork imports is still possible as a way to halt ASF outbreak.

Meanwhile, Cabatbat warned that the move may cause prices of pork to rise in the upcoming holiday season but he assured that local hog raisers will be able to meet the demands of the market.
