Following the devastating earthquake that struck the region, Turkish police detained a man who was attempting to steal a baby from a hospital in southern Turkey.
A 7.8-magnitude earthquake unleashed chaos in southeastern Turkey and parts of Syria, killing nearly 40,000 people and displacing millions.
According to reports, a man entered a hospital pretending to be a police chief in the quake-hit province of Hatay’s Samandag district on Wednesday.
The hospital staff realized his police ID card was fake and called the real police, it added.
When officers detained the man, they discovered fake police and military ID cards, gold, and money in Turkish lira, dollars, and euros totaling around $6,500.
The agency provided no information about the baby.
Some parents in the region have expressed concern to AFP about rumored child kidnappings.
Derya Yanik, Turkey’s Family Minister, said that the earthquake had separated at least 1,362 children from their families.
