The Ukrainian heavyweight champ Oleksandr Usyk dethroned the “Gypsy King” as he ravaged Tyson Fury in round 9 at Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia last May 18,2024.
The undisputed heavyweight Usyk maintained his undefeated record of 22-0. Fury on the other hand tasted his first defeat of 34-1-1.
The action-packed fight between Fury and Usyk resulted in a split decision. Judge Manuel Oliver Palermo gave 115–112 for Usyk, judge Craig Metcalfe tallied 114–113 for Fury, while judge Mike Fitzgerald scored it with 114–113 for Usyk.
However, the controversial 9th round made Fury almost give up in the rope after Usyk relentlessly attacked him but the referee broke the momentum.
The referee saved Fury and eventually reached round 12. Fury started orthodox during the bout and Usyk stuck with southpaw throughout the fight.
Boxing commentators believe that Usyk has nothing to prove anymore as he has beaten Anthony Joshua (AJ) twice, and now beaten Fury. They are asking him to retire and do not accept the rematch with Fury if there is any.
It can be recalled that Fury and AJ fought twice.but their trilogy did not happen when Fury fought Deontay WIlder instead due to legal issues.
As of this writing it is uncertain if there is a rematch or both champs will retire.
