MANILA – Pinag-iingat ng Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) ang mga residenteng nakatira malapit sa Taal Caldera dahil sa naitalang “volcanic smog.”
Ang Taal Caldera ay ang lawa sa paligid ng bulkang Taal, na sinasabing bahagi ng orihinal na anyo ng bulkan.
Sakop nito ang mga bayan ng Talisay, Laureal, Agoncillo, Santa Teresita, San Nicolas, Alitagtag, Cuenca, Balete, at Mataas na Kahoy. Pati na ang mga lungsod ng Tanauan at Lipa.
“For the past two days, high levels of volcanic sulfur dioxide or SO2 gas emissions and steam-rich plumes that rose as much as 3 kilometers high have been observed from the Taal main crater.”
Ayon sa Phivolcs, umabot ng hanggang 4,771 tonnes/day ang ibinugang sulfur dioxide ng bulkan kahapon, June 27.
Nasa 30-degree Celsius naman ang atmospheric temperature ng bulkan at 75% ang humidity ng hangin.
Habang ang bilis ng hangin ay naitala sa 1 to 0-meters/second.
“These atmospheric conditions, especially the near-absence of air movement, resulted in the formation of volcanic smog or vog that brought a pronounced haze over the Taal Caldera region.”
Paliwanag ng Phivolcs, isang uri ng polusyon sa hangin ang vog. Binubuo raw ito ng droplet na naglalaman ng volcanic gas tulad ng SO2.

“Whic is acidic and can cause irritation of the eyes, throat, and respiratory tract in severities depending on the gas concentrations and durations of exposure.”
“People particularly sensitive to such ill effects are those with health conditions such as asthma, lung and heart disease, the elderly, pregnant women and children.”
Ilan sa mga paalala ng ahensya ay ang limitadong exposure sa vog. Ito ay sa pamamagitan daw ng pag-iwas sa mga aktibidad sa labas ng bahay, at pagsasara sa mga pintuan at bintana.
Pinayuhan din ng Phivolcs ang mga residente na magsuot ng N95 facemask, at palaging uminom ng tubig.
“If belonging to the particularly sensitive group of people above, watch over yourself and seek help from a doctor or the barangay health unit if needed. If serious effects are experienced, call the doctor or the barangay health unit.”
Nananatili sa Alert Level 2 ang estado ng Taal volcano. Ibig sabihin, may posibilidad pa rin na magkaroon ng steam o gas-driven explosion ang bulkan.
