Former assistant branch manager Edwin Roberto of WellMed clinic and Philhealth officer Leizel Aileen de Leon filed an urgent ex-parte motion before the Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 219 to defer the commitment order of their transfer to Quezon City jail’s custody from National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).

The two whistleblowers are connected in the “ghost dialysis” controversy involving Wellmed clinic and Philhealth.

“Accused respectfully request the indulgence of the Honorable Court to defer their confinement to the Quezon City Jail and that they remain under custody of the National Bureau of Investigation until their formal commitment to the Witness Protection Program,” read the motion.

Legal counsel Atty. Harry Roque said his clients were under Department of Justice’s Witness Protection Program (WPP) since Tuesday, June 25.

Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra confirmed that Roberto and De Leon have been admitted to WPP for 90 days while waiting for the preliminary investigation of seven other people who were allegedly involved in the said scam.

Roberto and De Leon were indicted for estafa through falsification of official documents after defrauding Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth) by submitting medical claims for dead patients. / with reports from Bombo Jerald B. Ulep; edited by Bombo Sol Marquez
